Royal Life Saving recognises the importance of its volunteers through the Honours Awards System. Recognising the significant role volunteers play in educating people in water safety, survival, rescue, resuscitation and first aid techniques in an effort to reduce injury and loss of life through drowning.
Royal Life Saving Society – Australia is committed to recognising the efforts of its many dedicated members and volunteers. Their service can be recognised by Royal Life Saving through the use of the Commonwealth and Australian Honours Award Systems.
All nominations must be made on the appropriate form with a written citation attached, and submitted to the Queensland Branch by Monday 1 May 2023, who will endorse the application before it is forwarded to the National Office for consideration. A nomination can be made at any time, however the Australian Honours committee, meet once a year and a call for nominations and made approximately one month prior to the meeting.
In considering candidates for these awards, the level and length of performance and the quality of the service rendered are the necessary and key components to be reviewed and considered before any Honour or Award may be granted. Other criteria such as contributions, membership, council or committee involvement, etc. are important factors and these may play a role in determining the candidate’s eligibility and the level of the Honour awarded.

Commonwealth Honours
Commonwealth Honours are awarded to individuals and organisations in recognition of their invaluable contribution to the work of the RLSS. Whilst the honours system is intended to recognise the work of volunteers, members of staff could, if applicable, receive the Commonwealth Service Order.

Associate RLSSA
- Six years involvement with noteworthy service as an instructor, examiner or committee member.
Fellow RLSSA
- 10 years involvement with high level of service as an instructor, examiner or committee member.
Companion RLSSA
- 14 years involvement with outstanding service as an instructor, examiner representative or committee member.
Australian Meritorious Service Medal
- 15 years service with meritorious service as an instructor, examiner representative or committee member.
Life Member
- 18 years service with outstanding service as an instructor, examiner representative or committee member to National/State/Territory Branch.
Life Governor
- Minimum 22 years exemplary service, available to those who have already been awarded Life Member.

- Recognise specific individual efforts of a past or present professional officer or member of staff
Australian Service Order
- 5 years involvement as past/present officer/staff of National, State or Sub-branches of RLSSA.

Australian Meritorious Service Order
- 15 years involvement as past/present officer/staff of National, State or Sub-branches RLSSA.

BRAVERY AWARDS
- Bravery Awards are given to any person who undertakes a rescue or an attempted rescue in an aquatic environment. Nominations should be forwarded to respective State and Territory Member Organisations as soon as possible following the incident.
Australian Bravery Awards and Honours
President’s Commendation
- Awarded to a person who undertakes an aquatic rescue or attempted rescue.
Rescue Medal
- Awarded to a person who undertakes a rescue or attempted rescue in an aquatic environment under extreme or difficult circumstances.
Bravery Cross
- Awarded to a person who undertakes a rescue or attempted rescue in an aquatic environment under circumstances that endangers the life of the rescuer.
Australian Resuscitation Club Medal
- Awarded to a person who has attempted to save the life in any circumstances through the application of CPR regardless of the outcome.
