About NextGen Lifesavers
Royal Lifesaving’s goal is to deliver the NextGen Lifesavers Project to Queenslanders aged 8-17 years. NextGen Lifesavers aims to engage children 8+ years in a series of educational and enjoyable activities centred around lifesaving sports skills and become the next generation of lifesavers in their communities. The project equips participants with essential lifesaving techniques and foster values such as responsibility, teamwork and leadership.
Participation in the project also serves as a pathway to a rewarding aquatic career for young people. Lifesaving sports can lead participants into various careers including professional lifeguarding, swim teaching and coaching, aquatic facility management, and even competitive lifeguarding at national and international levels. These career pathways provide opportunities for personal growth and development but also contribute to the safety and well-being of communities.
The Queensland Government provided funding to Royal Life Saving Society Queensland and the NextGen Lifesavers Project to enable Queenslanders to participate in sport and recreation activities.
⇣ What is NextGen Lifesavers? ⇣
NextGen Lifesavers is a Royal Life Saving initiative for a Queensland youth-based aquatic water safety education project designed to:
- Promote lifesaving sport
- Improve water safety and lifesaving skills amongst 8-17 year old’s in Queensland.
⇣ Would your venue and staff like to be NextGen Lifesavers facilitators? ⇣
RLSSQ believes that your team could serve as ideal hosts for the NextGen Lifesaver Project. The project is designed to be adaptable and easily integrated into any swim school, swim club or youth-based organisation. By partnering with Royal, your facility can give youth a platform to learn, grow, and develop a passion for lifesaving and aquatic sport.
NextGen Lifesavers will be provided at no cost to all participating venues. To assist with the delivery of the project at your facility, Royal Life Saving will provide:
- Venue delivery staff training including a Teacher of Lifesaving and Cultural Competence Professional Development
- Program training and demonstrations
- Specialised equipment (on loan) to conduct the project
- Welcome pack for registered participants:
– rash shirts, cap, drink bottle and mesh swim bag - Assistance with promotion of the project with a marketing kit for your organisation to implement
- Support from the RLSSQ team
⇣ What's Involved ⇣
Royal Lifesaving is looking to partner with aquatic facilities, swim schools or youth-based organisations across Queensland to help deliver the NextGen Lifesavers Project to young Queenslanders.
Participating aquatic facilities can benefit from the project:
- Be part of a community-led water safety project
- Attract new clientele to your facility as participants
- Attract new potential staff to your facility by engaging young people in further education like Bronze Medallion and Pool Lifeguard accreditations
- Upskilling of qualified staff
- It is anticipated that participants will show interest in lifesaving sport and potentially undertake qualifications, becoming facilitators of NextGen Lifesavers in the future.
⇣ Project Delivery ⇣
Your organisation can deliver the project between the summer periods of 2025 and 2026. Your facility can also choose the duration of the project – you may choose to deliver the project as a school holiday program, local swim club training, event, or as a Water Safety Week program for your swim school.
As a pre-requisite, each participating facility must:
