| Queensland’s aquatic industry will come together in Brisbane on Tuesday 10th November 2026 for a dedicated safety forum and the formal launch of the Queensland Aquatic Facility Safety Industry Code of Practice. Hosted by Royal Life Saving Society Queensland on behalf of the Queensland Aquatic Industry Safety Committee (QAISC), the Queensland Aquatic Industry Safety Forum will bring together local governments, aquatic facility owners and operators, safety professionals, industry bodies and government representatives to share current insights, practical lessons and effective approaches to facility safety. The three-hour forum will examine emerging risks and opportunities across the sector, lessons from aquatic facility safety assessments, coronial insights, practical approaches to supervision and the tools available to help facilities strengthen their safety systems and operational practices. The event will culminate in the formal launch of Queensland’s first industry-developed Code of Practice dedicated to the safe operation of publicly accessible aquatic facilities. Developed over more than two years by the Queensland Aquatic Industry Safety Committee and facilitated by Royal Life Saving Queensland, the Code draws together regulatory and coronial recommendations, industry experience, research and recognised guidance into a practical framework for facility owners, operators and duty holders. It follows an extensive development and consultation process involving local governments, major aquatic operators, peak training and water safety bodies, and Queensland Government agencies. Advising that the forum and launch represent an important step in supporting a more consistent approach to aquatic facility safety across the state, Royal Life Saving Queensland Executive Director, Paul Barry explained “aquatic facilities are central to Queensland communities, providing places for people to learn, exercise, connect and enjoy the water. With that role comes a shared responsibility to ensure strong safety systems, effective supervision and well-supported frontline staff. “The Code provides a clear and practical reference point for the sector, while the forum creates an opportunity to learn from experience and consider how those expectations can be applied in facilities of different sizes and operating contexts.” ![]() Royal Life Saving Queensland State Manager Nikki Thornhill said the launch marked the beginning of the next phase of industry engagement and continuous improvement. Thornhill stated “the Code reflects a significant collective effort across Queensland’s aquatic industry. Its value will now come from how facility owners, operators and workers use it to review current practices, identify opportunities for improvement and strengthen safety culture. “The forum is designed to support that transition from shared lessons to practical action and to keep safety at the centre of how Queensland’s aquatic facilities are managed.” The Code does not replace legislation or existing regulatory requirements. It is intended to help owners, operators and duty holders understand and apply reasonable and practicable safety measures in line with their legal responsibilities and recognised industry guidance.
